Joseph LEE
Joseph Lee is a Hong Kong-based choreographer, performer, and performance curator. He graduated from The Chinese University of Hong Kong and completed an MA in Contemporary Dance at London Contemporary Dance School. He has served as Artistic Director of Unlock Dancing Plaza since 2022.
As a maker, Lee’s practice spans live performance, moving image, writing, and curation. His work investigates the significance of dance in contemporary life through the deconstruction of the presentation and ontology of the body, image, and symbol, and reframes performativity through durational and situational strategies. Many of his works intentionally introduce displacement, tension, and modulation, guiding external spectatorial experience towards inward reflection. His practice frequently explores popular culture, queer embodiment, bodily labour, and the continuities and ruptures between dance and its image.
Recent works include "A Dance for You with the Song That Made You Cry" (2024), which interrogates the constructed meanings of popular music and the relationship between private emotion and popular culture; the ongoing "Slow Dance" series (2023–), which extends and suspends rhythmic and coherent momentum to invert conventional expectations of dance temporality; and "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" (2023), which attempts to unpack the complex relationships between the image of the male body, gay culture, and the affective economy.
Lee’s live and moving-image works have been presented in the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, Australia, South Korea, Shanghai, and Beijing. He received the Hong Kong Arts Development Council’s Award for Young Artist in 2017.
