We grew up learning the rules. At the dinner table, the adults talked and the children shouldn’t interrupt. Which subject you'd study, which career, which person you'd end up with ,someone had already thought it through for you. Your dream was, in the end, the family's face. Obedient became a language. Silence was the dialect we spoke most fluently. Even when the rules later loosened, they kept echoing inside. Permission isn't the same as a voice. Being allowed to speak, and actually being able to ,those were never the same thing. How do we learn to trust our own voice again?
