On 2 November 2016, Hong Kong Dance Alliance (HKDC) kicks off its 19th Hong Kong Dance Awards “Call for Nominations” and unveils the first phase of new developments for the Awards. These include new production awards that will help ensure industry members operating on different scales and across different genres have a fair chance to win. Along with new awards, Nominations will be accepted from everyone, not just HKDA members, and there will be a phased increase in jury members beginning this year that will continue growing in coming years. The new Awards, open nominations, expansion of representatives from Hong Kong’s diverse dance sector, and adding voters to the Awards jury aim at meeting HKDA goals of greater transparency for the Hong Kong Dance Awards nominating, shortlisting, and selection processes.

New Production Awards for 2016
This year, in response to industry needs, production categories will be restructured into three “Outstanding Production” awards based on audience capacity of the production venue – there will be one award each for productions in large, medium, and small venues. Technical awards will also undergo a revamp with each area considered separately rather than across the board leading to three design awards – one each for Lighting and/or Visual Design; Set and/or Costume Design; and, Music Composition and/or Sound Design.

Call for Nominations
The call for nominations period is from 1 November 2016 to 3 January 2017 and for the first time, nominations will be accepted from anyone - from professionals in the industry to audience members. A shortlist will be announced in early March after review of all nominated works by expert panels. A final ballot will be held in March during which expert panelists will be joined by all members of the HKDA Executive Committee to form the jury that decides awards recipients. New members of HKDA Executive Committee from the independent dance sector will help balance interests of Hong Kong’s diverse dance scene.

Recipients, including for the Distinguished Achievement Award, will be announced during the 19th Hong Kong Dance Awards Presentation & Gala Performance held on 10 May 2017 (Wednesday), 8pm at Hong Kong City Hall Theater.
