HONG KONG DANCE AWARDS 2016 RESULTS ANNOUNCED AT SCINTILLATING GALA

The 18th annual Hong Kong Dance Awards were presented last night at a packed gala performance at Kwai Tsing Theatre. Entitled I Got Rhythm, Artistic Director Mandy Petty’s vibrant show lived up to its name and thrilled the audience with a scintillating mix of dance, from ballet and contemporary, to tap dance and locking and popping, displaying the diversity and dynamism of the local dance scene.

As last year, the Awards results were kept secret until the gala, creating plenty of suspense as each announcement was made. Among the recipients were City Contemporary Dance Company’s magnificent Soledad, which carried off awards for outstanding production and for Helen Lai’s stunning choreography and shared the award for ensemble performance with Hong Kong Ballet’s mesmerizing Bolero.

Awards for outstanding individual performance went to memorable portrayals by Hong Kong Ballet’s Shen Jie in Romeo and Juliet and Hong Kong Dance Company’s Tang Ya and Li Han in L’Amour Immortel. Two writers, Lo Wai Luk and Natasha Rogai, were honoured for their contribution to local dance criticism. Unlock Dancing Plaza’s Boy Story - Reborn received the award for outstanding achievement in independent production for its brilliant re-visiting of Yuri Ng’s iconic Boy Story.

The newly created Lifetime Achievement Award was presented by Guest of Honour Florence Hui Hiu-fai to Sin Yuen for his immeasurable contribution to the development of Chinese Dance in Hong Kong over the past 4 decades.

The Dance Awards are presented by the Hong Kong Dance Alliance.  The gala performance was generously sponsored by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department.
