The 19th Hong Kong Dance Awards – Lau Siu-ming Receives Distinguished Achievement Award and Ringo Chan Receives Lifetime Achievement Award

 

4 May 2017, Hong Kong The 19th Hong Kong Dance Awards announces today the dance pioneer Lau Siu-ming and dance practitioner and dance photographer Ringo Chan (1959 - 2016) are the recipients of Distinguished Achievement Award and Lifetime Achievement Award respectively. The above two awards, along with all twelve other outstanding awards, will be presented at the 19th Hong Kong Dance Awards Presentation and Gala Performance on 10 May 2017 (Wednesday), 8 pm at Hong Kong City Hall Theatre.

 

Established in 1999 by Hong Kong Dance Alliance, the Hong Kong Dance Awards recognize outstanding achievements and contributions to the art form by Hong Kong artists and organizations, also a creditable award in the Hong Kong Dance Scene. 

 

Lau Siu-ming - Recipient of Distinguished Achievement Award

Lau Siu-ming is a pioneer and tireless supporter of Hong Kong dance. Born 1930s, from being a mariner in his early life, to a scholarship holder dancing with world-class dance artists in France, later return as a front runner of the Hong Kong dance development, Lau has a legendary life.

 

Being one of the first local dancers to pursue dance training in Europe, he received scholarship at I’Ecole Superieure de Danse Cannes in early 1960s. During his time in Cannes, he was a student of the famous American Ballerina Rosella Hightower. He was later invited to join the world-known choreographer Maurice Béjart’s production in Belgian Ballet du Xxe Siècle.

 

On his return to Hong Kong in 1967, Lau engaged in dance education. He is one of the founder members of earliest dance organizations in Hong Kong - Hong Kong Ballet Group and Hong Kong Dance Federation. Lau also engaged himself in film and television, notably in Tsui Hark’s film A Chinese Ghost Story won him huge popularity. Lau was also a dance master for television stations Rediffusion Television and Television Broadcasts (TVB).

 

Lau’s contribution and enthusiasm for the Hong Kong dance scene is well recognized. He received the Hong Kong Dance Awards in 2002, Honorary Fellowship by the HKAPA in 2007, the Award for Outstanding Contribution in Arts in the Hong Kong Arts Development Awards (2009) in 2010 and the Medal of Honour by the Hong Kong SAR Government in 2013. 

 

Ringo Chan (1959 - 2016) - Recipient of Lifetime Achievement Award

Ringo Chan is a renowned dance practitioner and dance photographer who gave lifetime devotion to Hong Kong dance development. Chan joined the City Contemporary Dance Company (CCDC) in 1980 and is one of the first professional contemporary dancers in Hong Kong. He became Rehearsal Master of the CCDC in 1990 then was promoted to Assistant Artistic Director in 1993.

 

In the 1980s, Chan began photographing and filming for performing arts companies. In 1998, he published Hong Kong’s first dance photography book The Dance Photography of Ringo Chan, funded by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council. Chan also served as the Vice Chairman of the Hong Kong Dance Alliance and advisor of School of Dance of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. He received the Hong Kong Dance Awards in 1999 and Honorary Fellowship from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in 2006.
