The Artistic Director for this year’s Gala, Dominic Wong (Acting Artistic Director, City Contemporary Dance Company), is adopting an exciting new approach, showcasing Hong Kong’s rich diversity of dance and celebrating inclusivity with a special performance featuring dance schools, amateur dance groups and dancers with disabilities alongside professional dance artists.

This year the Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to honour the late Dr Tom Brown, whose untimely passing last November at the age of 70 was a huge loss to the Hong Kong dance community. From his arrival in Hong Kong in 1985 until his death, Dr Brown was a tireless pioneer of local dance development as teacher, mentor, scholar and artist. Among many achievements during his 30 years at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts he was Head of Modern Dance, Associate Dean of Dance and the first Dean of Graduate Education, roles in which he played a crucial part in nurturing local choreographers and dancers. He was the long-standing editor of dance journal/hk and steering person for the Dance Awards, both of which celebrate their 21st anniversaries this year. In 2007 he received the Home Affairs Bureau Certificate of Commendation for his outstanding contribution to the development of arts and cultural activities in Hong Kong, in 2015 the Distinguished Achievement Award at the Hong Kong Dance Awards and in 2017 a Doctorate in Dance Honoris Causa from the HKAPA.

From 1997 to 2006, he was Chairman of the Alliance and remained a member of the Executive Committee until his death. Following a successful career as a dancer and choreographer in his home country, the United States, Tom moved to Hong Kong in 1985 to join the newly-formed Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts where he taught for 30 years. He first joined as a Principal Teacher of Modern Dance and rose through the ranks to become Head of Modern Dance, Associate Dean of Dance, and Dean of Graduate Education, before retiring in 2015. During his time as Dean of Graduate Education, Tom led the development of Master of Fine Arts degree programs in Cinema Production, Dance, Drama and Theatre, Entertainment Arts, as well as the Master of Music degree and built a solid foundation for the programs.

Tom’s honours included the Hong Kong Dance Awards Distinguished Achievement Award in 2015 and an Honorary Doctorate from the Academy for Performing Arts in 2017.

A passionate dance artist, educator, and scholar throughout his life, Tom nurtured generations of local dance artists and made an immeasurable contribution to the development of dance in Hong Kong. His energy, commitment and charisma will be missed by everyone who knew him and had the good fortune to have worked with him. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time. A memorial service will be held by the Alliance, details of which will be announced soon.

20th Hong Kong Dance Awards – Anna CY Chan to Receive Distinguished Achievement Award

9 April 2018, Hong Kong – Hong Kong Dance Alliance (HKDA) is pleased to announce that Anna CY Chan is the recipient of Distinguished Achievement Award for her indefatigable work in dance education, promotion of Hong Kong dance, and innovations in ways to create, present, and sustain dance.

The award will be presented at the 20th Hong Kong Dance Awards Presentation and Gala Performance on 20 April 2018 (Friday), 8pm at Kwai Tsing Theatre Auditorium.

Anna CY Chan – Recipient of Distinguished Achievement Award

Chan, West Kowloon Cultural District Authority Head of Dance and 2016 City Contemporary Dance Laureate, started her dance journey as a student at the Jean M. Wong School of Ballet, where she later served as Vice Principal. Professionally trained in Australia and UK and with Master’s degrees in Dance and Education Studies from Universities of Surrey and Sheffield, respectively, Chan was Hong Kong Dance Alliance researcher and authored the 2004 Hong Kong Dance Award winning book Intelligent Moves: Dance Education advocating dance education as means for students to achieve full learning potential. As Alliance Chairperson she led it through major developments including achieving HKADC year grant status. She was the inaugural Head of Performing Arts Education Centre at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts creating successful community engagement projects and bringing thousands of school children to the Academy to learn about and participate in performing arts, and attend special performances by Academy students in all performing arts disciplines. Since she has been with WKCDA she has changed the way the dance community and audiences experience the art form, raising the bar in terms of skills, expectations, scope, and engagement. She is a dynamo who in a relatively brief career has already made a significant impact on dance in Hong Kong and represents all that is good in Hong Kong dance and its promise for a bright future.
