Nowadays, we are all witnessing a diverse ecology of dance arts in Hong Kong taking root and thriving. Shirley Loong Takes up the Post of Executive Director of Hong Kong Dance Alliance2022.3.14 The Hong Kong Dance Alliance is delighted to announce that Shirley Loong has accepted our invitation to join the administrative team in the newly-created post of Executive Director, with effect from 10 March 2022. She will therefore step down from her current role as Chairperson and will be succeeded by Allen Lam, whose current role as Vice-Chairperson will be taken by Angela Hang.
The creation of the Executive Director position is the result of careful deliberation by the entire Executive Committee, aimed at responding to the Alliance’s need for a capable, senior level executive and decision-maker with a thorough understanding of the dance industry to head the administrative team. The worldwide pandemic has also prompted the Alliance to expedite this organizational restructuring in order to adapt swiftly to the fast-changing situation of the dance sectors both at home and abroad.
Ms Loong has been active in the local dance scene for many years, with a successful career spanning multiple roles from dancer, ballet teacher, dance educator, arts administrator and producer to her newly acquired qualification as an international accredited professional mediator, which led her to head the Performing Arts Profession International Mediation Committee. During her tenure as Chairperson, Ms Loong set a clear direction for the development of the Alliance, which is approaching its 30th anniversary in 2025. Allen Lam says, ‘We are delighted that Shirley has agreed to take on this new role. Her vast experience in the Hong Kong dance sector and in particular within the Alliance will help to make sure that expert advice can be turned into action effectively.’
‘I very much look forward to working closely with our new Chairperson, Allen Lam and Vice Chairperson, Angela Hang,’ says Ms Loong. ‘While working to accomplish the Alliance’s mission and vision, together we'll strive to broaden and strengthen our connection with stakeholders, funders and members of the Alliance, as well as the local and global dance communities.’ |

WALL
We have fallen into a continually drowning swirl where we struggled to shout in silence.
Choreographer's Words
Despite walking on bustling streets, everyone's heart is distant and unreachable. The high wall is built inside their bodies, which is as tall as the skyscraper, is breaking the connection of people in this city. I dwell in a 120 square feet space, being silent and insignificant. There is a glass wall in the air that separates me, her and them. We have fallen into a continually drowning swirl where we struggled to shout in silence.
Choreographer/ Performer
Fiona Zhou
Fiona Zhou received her early dance training from mainland China. She came to Hong Kong for searching a wider international art vision. In 2014, Fiona completed the Master of Fine Arts in Dance Degree in the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. At the same time, she was awarded a scholarship from Hong Kong Dance Alliance o participate in the ADF China-Henan International Dance Master Class. Dance Productions - Platform for Emerging Choreographers Emerging Choreographers 20152015.7.3 - 4
Hong Kong Dance Alliance Proudly Presents “Emerging Choreographers 2015” Turning the Spotlight on New Talent
“Where are the choreographers of the future?” It’s a vital question for the dance community in Hong Kong and as part of its mission to support and develop local artists, Hong Kong Dance Alliance (HKDA) is proud to present “Emerging Choreographers 2015”, the latest in a series which gives up-and-coming choreographers a platform to create and present new work. Out of 18 applicants our expert panel has selected three talented young choreographers: Cliff Huen Tin-yeung, Joseph Lee Wai-nang and Li De. Mentored by Daniel Yeung, one of Hong Kong’s most respected choreographers, each will create an original 25-minute dance work to be performed in July at the Kwai Tsing Theatre Black Box Theatre.
Different Visions
The three choreographers come from different backgrounds and their work will offer different dance styles and address a range of topics. Cliff Huen’s trio Still Human asks if our busy life, with everything made easy by technology, has made us lose our innate ability to use our senses and recall primitive memories. In his duet The Other End, Joseph Lee tries to show us how every decision we make affects our lives. Li De’s trio Wonderful/Wild, inspired by a documentary about Shaolin Kung Fu, will transform traditional Kung Fu to reveal new aspects of the martial arts.
Dance lovers should not miss the chance to see these three intriguing and exciting works in one evening.

.. Mis ..
Misplace, Mistakes, Mis… Why obsess over them if the “mis-es” defines you?
The path of growing up is a lonely one. It always feels that nobody understands you and that there is no one to guide you; so by instinct, you improvise as you go along in life; yet who dares say they don’t have any regrets throughout their path? Until one day, you can finally let go of those “mis-es” that caught you up and realize that they are exactly those mis-es that mold the person you current are.
And that, my friend, is when you are grown up.
Choreographer: Michael Tong
Michael Tong was first introduced to dancing when he entered university at the age of 19 . He joined the modern dance society of CUHK and had participated in multiple intervarsity dance performances and competitions. It is not until 2009 has he received technical training in Studiodanz. He joined the Showbiz project co-organized by Studiodanz and Space team in 2010 and had participated in several commercial performances including dancing for beauty pageants and in music videos. Since 2011, he has been focusing mainly on modern and contemporary and had taken part in modern dance pieces such as Solo Act II choreographed by Pewan Chow.
Tong has always been passionate about choreography; inspired by the various dance styles he has been exposed to, he takes interest in different possibilities in movements and has created pieces ranging from lyrical jazz to more contemporary recently. Thanks to REAL showcase, he finally has the opportunity to launch his first full length dance piece

Festivals, Seminars, Workshops Project DARE Conversation Series 20122012.1.16 - 6.1 Project DARE falls under the umbrella dancers' transition initiative of the Hong Kong Dance Alliance, with the aim of providing induction to dance professionals interested in finding more about career possibilities beyond stage performance.
Talk 1: Dance Education -- "From dance 'teacher' to dance 'educator' - basic concepts of Dance Pedagogy/ Motif Teaching/ Creative Movements"Being the first talk of the series, it was held on 16 Jan 2012. It was our pleasure to have Miss Yunyu Wang as our speaker. Miss Wang is a certified Labanotation teacher, reconstructor and Laban Movement Analyst. She has a MFA from the University of Illinois and is a founding dancer of Cloud Gate Theatre, Taiwan. Miss Wang is now the President of World Dance Alliance Asia Pacific.
About 50 participants joined the 2-hour talk, during which Miss Wang gave a high level introduction to Laban Movement Analysis. She then placed the concept of "dance education" in front of this theoretical backdrop to explain the difference between teaching "movement" and teaching "dance." Dance students should be encouraged to participate in creating movement and to understand their bodies, the knowledge in Dance Science and the different techniques in Somatics could help dance tutors in planning lesson plans more systematically.
Talk 2: Marketing -Basic concepts of Marketing and Dance Programme PublicityThe discipline of marketing applies not only to commercial sector, but also to dance, especially when artists have to deal with the reality of ticket sales. If the number of tickets sold is a reflection of the marketing effort devoted to the programme, what skills are required to take artists to their goals?
Katy Cheng, Marketing Director of Hong Kong Arts Festival Ltd., spent two hours in the evening of 12 March 2012 with over 20 practicing artists and arts administrators to reveal her experience and "tips" in dance marketing. While touching on basic marketing principles of the 4Ps, positioning, and advertising skills, Katy focused her sharing on case studies that provide real-life examples to close the perception gap of the relationship between "arts" and "sales." She also advised participants that as artists, while they should be dedicated to creating works, they should also be alert to what's happening around them so that their works can more readily relate to audiences, and hence a larger ticker sales potential.
Talk 3: Touring - how to create opportunity and how to nurture future potentialThe 3rd talk of Conversation Series explores how emerging artists could get the attention from overseas program buyers and nurture for themselves overseas performance experience. The area of touring is getting more attention partly because of the stagnant audience growth in Hong Kong, and because of globalization trend making the exchange of cultural activities more and more popular.
Our speaker was Elaine Yeung, Chief Manager (Audience Building, Festivals & Entertainment), Leisure and Cultural Services Department, who previously spent a long period of time overseeing cultural exchange events of the LCSD. The talk was intended to be a small-group, cosy discussion on 1st June 2012. Elaine kindly shared her experience with the participants and welcoming took their questions and comments. One important piece of advice by Elaine to young artists was that they should strive for any kind of performing opportunities, regardless of scale, venue or target audiences, because this is the most direct way of creating exposure and remembrance. Also artists should aggressively reach out to producers to introduce themselves, and must maintain a positive attitude when failure calls as reality is harsh and competition keen. An artist's road to success is long and winding, but persistence wins. |
Festivals, Seminars, Workshops - Close The Loop "Close the Loop" Arts Administration Mentorship Program2012.1.1 Co-presented by Hong Kong Dance Alliance and Hong Kong Arts Administrators Association, "Close the Loop" arts administration mentorship program aims to provide practicing artists in Hong Kong the opportunity to learn from a well-established arts administration mentor on one-on-one basis. Open for application at the beginning of 2012, seasoned arts administrators provided successful applicants guidance and problem solving techniques on the following areas:
The mentor shared perspectives to broaden the artist's vision, enhancing his/her decision-making ability and problem-solving skills.
The successful applicants in 2012 are Mayson Tong Wai Chun and Rita Kwong Lai Yin. Their mentors are respectively Anthea Chan and Fong King Sang. Maysons production is scheduled for Aug 2012 and Rita's Oct 2012. |
Festivals, Seminars, Workshops HK-Burgundy Cultural Exchange Lectures2011.10.29 Presented by the Hong Kong Dance Alliance, The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, and Festival International de Video Danse de Bourgogne, and sponsored by the Regional Government of Burgundy, Marisa C. Hayes & Franck Boulegue, Co-directeurs, Festival International de Video Danse de Bourgogne, gave two public lectures at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in Oct 2011. The public lectures were activities under the umbrella event of "Week of Burgundy", a collaborative partnership between the region of Burgundy and Hong Kong.
The lecture subjects were "Screendance" and "100 years of Le Sacre du Printemps". The former focused on the latest development of dance videos around the globe, while the latter examined the timeless themes and motifs of Le Sacre du Printemps, from its earliest history to present-day productions, in styles of dance as varied as ballet, hip-hop or butoh. |
Festivals, Seminars, Workshops - Close The Loop Art Administration Talk for Dance Practitioners2011.10.13 A high-quality dance production is the combined effort of artistry and execution excellence. In a modern society where the ability to effectively multi-task is emphasized, it is important for dancers to also learn about arts management and administration. In view of this trend, Hong Kong Dance Alliance and Hong Kong Arts Administrators Association co-presented an art administration talk on 13 Oct 2011 and invited two veteran dance administrators, Ms Helen Ng and Ms Clementine Chan, Managing Director of City Contemporary Dance Company, to introduce to the participants the various aspects of dance / arts administration. Festivals, Seminars, Workshops Legend Lin Body Training Workshop for Professionals (2011)2011.8.10
The much acclaimed and respected Legend Lin Dance Theatre from Taiwan has only created 3 productions in the 16 years since it was established. Such dedication and patience has won its recognition all over Europe and LIN Li-chen, Artistic Director, has been nominated as one of the 8 most influential contemporary choreographers by ARTE, Europe's leading art TV channel. The aesthetics of Legend Lin is inseparable from its body training system, which emphasizes power generated from concentration, serenity, flexibility. Focused spine training aims to make the dancers' spine as flexible as a whip. The more relaxed the spine is, the more powerful the energy transmitted.
LCSD commissioned Hong Kong Dance Alliance to conduct a workshop targeting professional dancers in August 2011 when Legend Lin Dance Theatre visited Hong Kong for activities related to Asian Cultural Festival 2011. Professionals will not only have the opportunity to experience this exclusive training system themselves, but also understand LIN Li-chen's aesthetics through a conversation session led by Aaron Wan. |
Dance Productions - School Tour and Outreach 2011 International Arts Carnival2011.5.20 - 8.14 LCSD commissioned Hong Kong Dance Alliance to produce the school and outreach tour for International Arts Carnival 2011. Hong Kong Dance Alliance saw this as an appropriate opportunity to conduct audience development at a deeper level, to the audiences at an age when they begin to see the possibility of differentiating art from entertainment.
The Project required us to produce 30 performances at schools and 20 at outreach venues. The theme of the performance is to challenge how our increasingly passivity when perceiving images and videos broadcasted on the Internet. Titled "Seeing" is Believing, the performance is designed for students between the age of 10-14. During school touring, there is also a 20-minute interaction with the audiences, with the purpose of inspiring them to view dance beyond movements and try to see understand the meaning that is being communicated. The theme is deliberately designed to be more serious and provoke doubts as we are against the assumption that teenagers will not be able to understand serious subject matters. It is the role of adults to find ways to make these subjects comprehensible to the teenagers instead of simply avoiding the discussion.
The tour ran from 20 May 2011 through to 14 August 2011.

Dance Productions - Cultural Exchange HK / Australia Cultural Exchange: Perfect Pairs and Odd Couples (2011)2011.1.7 - 9 Hong Kong Dance Alliance presented Perfect Pairs and Odd Couples with the aim of promoting artistic exchange between Hong Kong and Australian artists. Three performances ran at the Fringe Theatre, Hong Kong, between 7-9 January 2011.
The program opened with Sprung created by two of Australia's most recognized dance artists, Sue PEACOCK and Stefan KARLSSON. Combining theatre elements including music, visuals, text, and movement, the duet invited audiences to share the dancers' reminiscences of the highlights and low spots of their artistic life journeys. Melbourne-based artists Jo LLOYD and Deanne BUTTERWORTH's work Project Blah Blah gave an improvisational impression full of rapid and frequent changes of level and tempo that created a sense of unexpectedness and belied its careful construction. Hong Kong artists LI Yongjing and LAM Po closed the program with a new work, The Moment I Saw It. The work used large sheets of tracing paper to create crisp sound effects when crushed and to change the space into a nicely contrasting combination of black and white - the colors of Asian eyes.
Perfect Pairs and Odd Couples recorded a successful box office of two full houses out of three showings. Participating artists also gave workshops to professional dance practitioners and amateurs to strengthen the community engagement of the project. |

Dance Productions - Platform for Emerging Choreographers Dance Platform 05 (2005)2005.11.5 Dance Platform 05 is a project for new choreographers. To ensure that the project achieved a certain standard, an open call for proposals was announced in dance journal/hk. After selection by a panel composed of Pewan CHOW, Stella LAU, and YU Pik Yim, respectively Lecturers of Modern Dance, Ballet and Chinese Dance of Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, 7 artists/groups were invited to participate in the Project: 5 Ding, Informal Space, Kelvin LAM, Cindy LEUNG, Cyrus HUI, Pinkey TANG, Chloe WONG.
Dance Platform emphasizes the continuous process of choreography. To achieve that, two informal closed showings of works-in-progress were held in September and October 2005, before the formal public performance. Guests, such as Maggi SIETSMA, Tom BROWN, John UTAN, PEI Chang Qing were invited. After each showing, there was a discussion section, in which the guests gave their comments and the participating artists were encouraged to discuss and exchange observations among themselves. This is a meaningful part of the project that ensures the participating artists work continuously, and the feedback and discussion are valuable to new artists. This give and take of feedback from peers and experts helped the choreographers to further refine their ideas and develop their works. |
Dance Productions - Cultural Exchange Dance Wide HKNY (2005)2005.7.1 - 12.31 Dance Wide HKNY was an exchange platform where full-fledged artists got together and shared their knowledge, explored new forms, exchanged and expanded their visions. Between July to December 2005, eight artist channeled their creative energies through series of workshops, forums, rehearsals, and performances in Hong Kong and New York. Gems of movement are expected from involved artists: Abby CHAN, Allen LAM, Andy WONG, YEUNG Wai Mei, Julian BARNETT, Maura DONOHUE, Rebecca JUNG, and Christopher MORGAN.
In its 4th anniversary program, Dance Wide HKNY invited U.S. choreographers who were known for their artistic perspectives and intercultural backgrounds: Julian BARNETT, a Japanese-Irish-American; Maura DONOHUE, a Vietnamese-Irish-American; Christopher MORGAN, a Chinese-Japanese-Hawaiian; and Rebecca JUNG, a Chinese-American. Theme of the 2005 forum focused on artistic development and social impacts through cross-cultural dance collaboration. The U.S. performance took place at the Mulberry St. Theatre on 27 August 2005 while the Hong Kong debut, titled "Back Home", was presented on 9 - 10 December 2005 at the Hong Kong Cultural Center. |
Dance Productions - School Tour and Outreach 2005 International Arts Carnival2005.1.1 Hans Christian Andersen's "The Emperor's New Clothes" is so familiar to everyone that it might easily be dismissed as simply a tale only for children, overlooking its deeper meaning and much of its fun. In the summer of 2005, commissioned by the LCSD, Hong Kong Dance Alliance "updated" the story and bring to HK audiences a surprising Dance. The Emperor's New Clothes.
Why did the Emperor want so many clothes? How did he see himself in his mirror? What were the mirror's opinions? Are the Weavers merely con men with a fantastic con? What was on the child's mind when he pointed out the truth?
Touring to 50 primary schools and 20 outdoor venues, the performances let children discover the problems and answers through appreciating and participating.
