20th Hong Kong Dance Awards Presentation and Gala Performance

 

Established by Hong Kong Dance Alliance, Hong Kong Dance Awards Presentation and Gala Performance is an annual celebration of achievements by dance artists and organizations, as well as enhancing public awareness of the diversity and excellency of local dance scene. The 20th Hong Kong Dance Awards will present 14 awards, including Outstanding Choreography, Productions, Performance and Distinguished Achievement Award.
 
This year, HKDA welcomes David Liu as the Artistic Director for the Gala. The Gala gives dance lovers a unique opportunity to enjoy performances by leading dance artists in one sparkling evening. Performing groups include Hong Kong Ballet, Hong Kong Dance Company, City Contemporary Dance Company and The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.

Check out the Creative Space 2018: Residency for Mid-Career Choreographers program!

Presented by Hong Kong Dance Alliance, the 5-month Residency targets local mid-career choreographers. The Residency will take place from August to December 2018 at CCDC Dance Centre. 
The artists-in-residence will join regular workshops to strengthen their techniques, research and consolidate their artistic concepts for the new dance piece. The Alliance will provide administration, production and artistic support. The double bill will be premiered at Ko Shan Theatre New Wing Auditorium on 11-12 January 2019.

To apply, simply submit your 1) Online application form, 2) CV and 3) Past productions’ video links on or before 10 April. The results will be announced in May 2018.

Hong Kong Dance Alliance announces the 2nd Collaborative Creative Lab from 4 to 22 December. Aimed at fostering research and development capabilities for dance and performing artists, through three weeks of intensive collaborative research workshops, the Lab seeks to encourage interdependent and multi-lateral learning strategies in the creative process. The sharing and presentation session will be held in the last session of the project.

Nederlands Dans Theatre (NDT) Workshop for Professional Dance Artists

 

NDT WORKSHOP FOR PROFESSIONAL DANCE ARTISTS

Led by NDT1 dancer Lydia Bustindy, a workshop for professional dance artists, which based on In the Event choreographed by Crystal Pite, will be held on 8 Nov.

 

 

Nederlands Dans Theatre (NDT)

Found in 1959 by Benjamin Harkarvy, Aart Verstegen and Carel Birnie in cooperation with eighteen dancers from Het Nationale Ballet, NDT was renowned in the modern dance field for its nonconformist, avant-garde productions. The company has built a rich repertoire of 600 works by renowned choreographers such as Jiří Kylián, Hans van Manen and Sol León. NDT now under the artistic guidance of Paul Lightfoot, consists of 28 dancers between 24 and 41 years old of different countries, acknowledged for their astonishing technique and expression.

20th Hong Kong Dance Awards – Call for Nominations and New Award

 

1 November 2017, Hong Kong – Hong Kong Dance Alliance (HKDA) announces the Call for Nominations for the 20th Hong Kong Dance Awards. Marking 20 years of excellence, Hong Kong Dance Awards pay tribute to outstanding work of individual artists and dance organizations in productions throughout the year, as well as acknowledge distinction in other activities related to dance and the Hong Kong dance community. Artists honored in the past include Lau Siu Ming, Willy Tsao, Helen Lai, Yuri Ng, Mui Cheuk Yin, Jean Wong, Aaron Kwok, and Jackie Chan. The 20th Hong Kong Dance Awards Presentation & Gala Performance will be held at Kwai Tsing Theatre Auditorium on 20 April 2018 (Friday).

 

Call for Nomination

Nominations in twelve award categories are open for submission by anyone – from dance practitioners to audience members. Following the close of nominations, a shortlist, determined by balloting distinguished experts in the dance field, will be announced in early 2018.  As in previous years, this year’s Expert Panels have been expanded to further enhance the representativeness and diversity of the Awards.

 

New Choreographer Award

To celebrate this special anniversary, the Hong Kong Dance Alliance Executive Committee are pleased to announce the establishment of an additional award intended to draw attention to the work of new choreographers. The candidates of “New Choreographer Award” will be nominated by the Expect Panel and Executive Committee members of the HKDA, the recipient will be announced at the Presentation.

 

Nominations close on 3 January 2018 (Wed). Interested parties can complete the Nomination Form and submit via 1) email, 2)  Google Form, or 3) by post to 7/F, 26-28 Tai Yau Street, San Po Kong, Kowloon by 6pm on or before that day.

‘New Force in Motion’ presents new dance works of emerging choreographers. This year, it aims to offer a professional platform for young choreographers to showcase choreography, encourage development, and stimulate creativity through artistic mentoring and collaborative research. It is presented by LCSD and produced by Hong Kong Dance Alliance for the first time.

Hong Kong Delegation to World Dance Alliance Global Summit in Canada

 

Hong Kong Dance Alliance Leads Delegation to World Dance Alliance Global Summit in Canada

 

 

The Hong Kong Dance Alliance (HKDA), the official Hong Kong organization of the World Dance Alliance (WDA), will lead a delegation to attend the triennial WDA Global Summit held at Memorial University, St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada from 23 to 28 July 2017.

 

This year’s Summit gathers WDA regional organizations from the Americas, Asia Pacific, and Europe to explore resistance and support of formations of power through dance under the theme of Dancing from the Grassroots. The summit includes roundtable discussions, parallel international conferences, masterclasses, performances, a choreographic lab, and digital dance concerts, that will provide delegates from Hong Kong and elsewhere rich creative experiences.

 

The Hong Kong delegation will present two productions during the Summit – Babel 3.5 choreographed by Iris Lau and Never Stop Blooming by Judy Yiu. In addition, Hong Kong delegates Rex Cheng and Judy Yiu will conduct masterclasses in Tai Chi Movement and Contemporary Dance with Gymnastics. While attending the Summit, HKDA representatives will make use of the wide-range of networking opportunities to explore opportunities for collaborations and to promote dance in Hong Kong to international participants.

 

The delegation is financially supported by Hong Kong Arts Development Council. Post-Summit sharing sessions and masterclasses will be conducted by the HKDA in Hong Kong during August and September.

19th Hong Kong Dance Awards

 

19th Hong Kong Dance Awards Presentation and Gala Performance

 

 

Presented by Hong Kong Dance Alliance (HKDA), the 19th Hong Kong Dance Awards acknowledge outstanding achievements in Hong Kong Dance industry and raise public awareness of the diversity and excellence of local dance scene. The HKDA invited Ms Elaine Yeung Chi-lan, Assistant Director (Performing Arts) of Leisure and Cultural Services Department as the Guest of Honor, accompanied by HKDA Executive Committee Chairperson Ms Stella Lau. 

 

Awards Presentation

This year, fourteen awards were presented to recipients, in which twelve awards were announced on stage, with outstanding work in choreography, production, performance, design for dance, dance education, and services to dance. Awardees were voted by the Selection Jury composed by HKDA Executive Committee and external members of two Expert Panels. 

 

Among the recipients were: Helen Lai for her Outstanding Choreography in While the Dream Unfolds (Hong Kong Dance Company) and Hong Kong Ballet for Lady of the Camellias, the Outstanding Large Venue Production. Awards for Outstanding Performance went to Kelvin Mak in Mother, I am Sorry (City Contemporary Dance Company), Chen Zhi-yao as Odette in Swan Lake (Hong Kong Ballet), and Pan Ling-juan as Wah Man-ying/ King-tin in Chinese Hero: A Lone Exile (Hong Kong Dance Company).

 

In addition, the Distinguished Achievement Award was presented to Lau Siu-ming and a Lifetime Achievement Award was posthumously awarded to Ringo Chan. The awards recognize continuous contributions to Hong Kong Dance development over the past decades.

 

Gala Perforamance

Under the artistic direction of Allen Lam, the audience enjoyed an array of dazzling performances. Performing companies included City Contemporary Dance Company, Hong Kong Ballet, Hong Kong Dance Company, two world premières by Hong Kong Dance Award Fellowship recipients - Pak Wei-ming and Wayson Poon, the School of Dance of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, and piano performance by Colleen Lee. 

 

The Dance Awards do not only recognize outstanding accomplishments, but are also testament to the importance of dance to Hong Kong culture.
