22^nd Hong Kong Dance Awards – Shortlisted Nominations Announced

8 May 2020 – Hong Kong Dance Alliance (HKDA) is pleased to announce the shortlisted nominations for the 22^nd Hong Kong Dance Awards and the presentation of the Distinguished Achievement Award to Daniel Yeung.

Since 1999, the Hong Kong Dance Awards have celebrated outstanding achievements in the local dance field and recognized artists and organizations for their contribution to the development of dance in Hong Kong. Those honoured in the past include companies such as City Contemporary Dance Company, Hong Kong Ballet, Hong Kong Dance Company, Unlock Dancing Plaza and Passoverdance; choreographers such as Helen Lai, Mui Cheuk-yin and Yuri Ng and recipients of the Distinguished Achievement Award such as Lau Siu-ming, Jean M. Wong, Anna CY Chan and Dr Tom Brown.

Shortlisted Nominations

This year, 44 outstanding nominees have been shortlisted under 14 award categories (click here for the shortlisted nominations). The shortlists were determined by a ballot of expert panelists held after reviewing all the nominations received this year. A final ballot will be conducted in March to decide the Awards with an expanded jury including all members of the HKDA Executive Committee. Award recipients will be announced during the 22^nd Hong Kong Dance Awards Presentation & Gala Performance. Distinguished Achievement Award – Daniel Yeung

The Distinguished Achievement Award will be presented to Daniel Yeung Chun-kong for his immense contribution to the development of dance in Hong Kong as performer, choreographer, dance critic, mentor and curator. In addition to his own outstanding career as an artist, Yeung has played a major role in advancing and enriching Hong Kong dance by nurturing local emerging dance artists and fostering interaction between the Hong Kong dance community and its international counterparts.

Considering the uncertainty of the infection risk of COVID-19 and in response to the current social situation, there are changes applied to the 22^nd Hong Kong Dance Awards Presentation & Gala Performance which has been postponed taking place on 18 July 2020 at Kwai Tsing Theatre Auditorium. Results will be presented in a different way and details will be announced soon.

"Dance Tutorial Video Testing Ground"

Call for submission

"Dance Tutorial Video Testing Ground" is a project presented by Hong Kong Dance Alliance in response to the dance community situation under the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Alliance is showing support to the dance community with this project, hope to encourage dance tutors to research on how dance tutorials could be adapted to video/digital format in a creative way and provide free tutorials for general public to dance/exercise at home.

This project would not be only beneficial to dance tutors and dance students, general public who are interested in dance and workout whom could not attend physical dance lessons due to COVID-19 would also be benefited.

A research fee of HKD 2,000 will be offered to the applicant who submitted the dance video which is later be selected to share on the Alliance Facebook Page. A total of 15 quotas are available.

• The submitted dance tutorial video(s) shall remain unlisted on any media platforms or for private use only before the notification of selection result and before the publication by the Alliance.

22^nd Hong Kong Dance Awards Postponed

due to COVID-19 Pandemic

24 March 2020 —— Hong Kong Dance Alliance (the Alliance) announces the postponement of the 22^nd Hong Kong Dance Awards.

The 22^nd Hong Kong Dance Awards Presentation & Gala Performance was originally scheduled to take place on 17 April 2020 at Kwai Tsing Theatre Auditorium. However, due to the measures in place to combat the COVID-19 pandemic, it has been postponed as follows:

Date:               18 July 2020 (Sat)

Time:               8pm

Venue:             Auditorium, Kwai Tsing Theatre

In line with the postponement of the Awards presentation, the shortlisted nominations for outstanding achievement in 2019 will be announced on 8 May 2020.  As usual, the Awards results will be announced at the Presentation and Gala Performance and will be kept secret until then.

The Artistic Director for this year’s Gala, Dominic Wong (Acting Artistic Director, City Contemporary Dance Company), is adopting an exciting new approach, showcasing Hong Kong’s rich diversity of dance and celebrating inclusivity with a special performance featuring dance schools, amateur dance groups and dancers with disabilities alongside professional dance artists.

The Chairperson of the Alliance, Shirley Loong, says: “While we are naturally disappointed to have to postpone the Awards presentation, we believe that holding the Gala in July will be the perfect occasion for the local dance community to come together after the dark days of the Covid-19 epidemic, celebrate our unity in the face of hardship and pay tribute to the outstanding achievements of our peers.”

We look forward to welcoming the public and members of the dance community to join us for this joyous event and experience the best of Hong Kong dance.

FrancisJohn CHAN, London-based Hong Kong interdisciplinary artist, is planning to conduct a research project on ‘Current Hong Kong dance scene’. The Alliance will match him with Hong Kong senior dance artists (especially dance artists who have involved in environmental dance projects), dance critics and venue authorities for his research and exploration.

HO Ming Yan (Supporting aspect: Mentor matching, Production budget management, Workshop teaching)

The Alliance will provide advice on production budget management to emerging local dance artist HO Ming Yan and match her with senior dance practitioners as her mentors to provide artistic advice on her new work.

Tha Alliance will also arrange a session of workshop on body movement for her and participating artists.

Kenny LEUNG Kim Fung (Supporting aspect: Publicity expertise matching, Brand building)

The Alliance will link up Hong Kong independent dance artist Kenny LEUNG with marketing expertise in art and cultural companies, allowing him to come up with his own marketing strategies to promote his upcoming new work and other works in the future.

New Chairperson for Hong Kong Dance Alliance

The Hong Kong Dance Alliance has announced the following changes to its Executive Committee effective 17 December 2019:

The Chairperson of the Alliance, Stella Lau, will step down from her position but will remain as a member of the Executive Committee. The Alliance thanks Stella for her dedication and outstanding service as chairperson over the past five years. Shirley Loong has been appointed Chairperson and Allen Lam will take over from her as Vice-Chairperson. In addition, Sylvia Wu has resigned from her position as a member of the Executive Committee and the Alliance thanks her for her services over the past three years.

The Hong Kong Dance Alliance serves as a primary voice and support group for dance in Hong Kong and for Hong Kong dance worldwide under the leadership of the Executive Committee and continues to strive to fulfill its mission of serving as a key driver of dance development in Hong Kong.

The application deadline for A Dance Journey - Hong Kong Dance Alliance Fellowship has been extended to 7 February 2020.

A Dance Journey - Hong Kong Dance Alliance Fellowship

Most local choreographers work as freelance artists without any regular support from art managers, administrators, or agents. The increasing overseas exchange opportunities for local dance talents have also intensified the need for agency support and professional guidance. The Alliance is very keen on supporting artists by providing holistic administrative assistance and management that takes into account artistic goals for potential candidates in need. It is also eager to instigate open dialogue with dance artists on innovative projects and ways and means to develop sustainable support for projects and artists.

The fellowship aims to:

• Match new choreographic talents with senior dance practitioners as their mentors to provide guidance and artistic development advice.
• Provide in-kind publicity, brand building and administration support for projects artists are planning to engage in, to help them advance their careers.
• Offer assistance to selected choreographic artists in broadening their artistic development, clarifying their aims and vision, and identifying and gaining the skills and knowledge needed to nurture their careers.

Eligibility

All local choreographers who are willing to commit to consistent engagement with dance are eligible to apply. Graduates from local institutes of performing arts who are eager to start developing their career in choreography are also eligible to apply.

Period

Early February 2020: Announcement of successful applicants and first review meeting ( to discuss planning and direction for projects) 

February – June 2020: Mentoring sessions, representation and networking, publicity and administrative support

【Event Postponed】SWEAT Festival, World Dance Alliance Global Summit and International Festival of Dance Academics

WDA Global Summit and International Festival of Dance Academics in Hong Kong, 15-21 June 2020  

The World Dance Alliance (WDA) Global Summit and International Festival of Dance Academics will be held in Hong Kong on 15-21 June 2020. The activities include Long Table Discussion, Pecha Kucha presentation, Pop-up showcase, Open Studio and Dance film screening. It will be co-organised by the Hong Kong Dance Alliance and Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.   

The WDA Global Summit will partner with SWEAT -  Hong Kong International Dance Workshop Festival, which is presented and organized by Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts.
