23rd Hong Kong Dance Awards 2022

2022.4.19

Press Release - For immediate release

23rd Hong Kong Dance Awards 2022

- 20 awards presented in live streamed ceremony

- Exceptional work produced despite the pandemic

16 April 2022 – Hong Kong Dance Alliance (HKDA) is delighted to announce the recipients of the 23rd Hong Kong Dance Awards, which were presented in an online ceremony streamed live on the Alliance YouTube channel and Facebook page at 8.00pm local time on Saturday 16 April. A total of 20 awards including two Lifetime Achievement Awards and 18 awards decided by a jury of expert panelists were presented by emcees Irene Lo and Shirley Loong and accepted remotely by the awardees. The physical trophies will be passed to the recipients later, along with certificates for the shortlisted nominees.

More than 50 nominations were shortlisted in 15 categories, covering work created between January 2020 and December 2021.  Alliance Chair Allen Lam noted that, while it was sad that the traditional Awards Ceremony and Gala Performance could not be held due to the current pandemic restrictions, ‘The quality of the shortlisted nominations shows the strength and resilience of the Hong Kong dance community, which has overcome the obstacles of the pandemic over the past two years to create so much truly exceptional work.  They can be proud of their achievements and we look forward to a bright future for dance in Hong Kong.’

Co-Chair of the Awards Jury, Natasha Rogai, added ‘In 15 years of working on the Awards, I have never seen stronger shortlists – there were several categories where two awards were presented and all the shortlisted nominations were worthy of an award.’

Five Awards for Hong Kong Dance Company

Hong Kong Dance Company received no fewer than five awards.  Its co-production with Freespace of Helen Lai’s classic Nine Songs was honoured as Outstanding Large Venue Production and for Outstanding Ensemble Performance, with Huang Lei receiving his third Outstanding Male Performance Award and his wife, Hua Chi-yu, receiving the Award for Outstanding Female Performance for a record-breaking fourth time.  The company also became the first recipient of the new Online Production Award for Convergence.

The company’s artistic director, Yang Yuntao said: “We will never give up. Every day, even if it’s within the one or two square meters of our own space, we will always strive to keep our bodies fit and ready to dance – that is all that we can do; no matter the changes in the outside environment, our passion for dance, the standard we aim for, will never falter. Let’s stand strong and work together!”

Choreography

Two awards were presented for Outstanding Choreography: to Hong Kong Ballet’s artistic director, Septime Webre, for his spectacular new The Nutcracker and to Hong Kong icon Mui Cheuk-yin for Diary VII ◦ The Story of…… which also received Outstanding Small Venue production.

The prestigious Tom Brown Emerging Choreographer Award went to Kelvin Mak, artistic director of Beyond Dance Theater, whose powerful Remnants was named Outstanding Medium Venue Production sharing that award with City Contemporary Dance Company’s Days Are Numbered, which featured choreography by Justyne Li, Bruce Wong and Jennifer Mok.

Kelvin Mak said “I would like to thank the late Mr. Tom Brown for his support to the local dance scene, and to us emerging artists. I hope that this goodwill, passion, and spirit can be inherited and passed on.”

Lifetime Achievement Award

At the opposite end of the experience spectrum from rising star Mak, the Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to two remarkable women who have made an immeasurable contribution to the development of dance in Hong Kong over many decades: Tania Tang and Professor Shen Shir Ming.  Accepting the awards, Professor Shen commented:

“I can see that the Hong Kong Dance Alliance set their sights beyond traditional definitions of dance; rather than simply focusing on choreography and performance, they aim to establish exchange and collaboration on all levels of the creative process between the dance sector and other industries, so that talents in dance may develop in a cross-disciplinary manner.”

And from Ms Tang:

“Looking back, there were only a few foreign ballet teachers in Hong Kong. Nowadays, we are all witnessing a diverse ecology of dance arts in Hong Kong taking root and thriving. To the many generations of dancers to come, we must remain steadfast in our beliefs and work ethic; to all workers related to dance, we need to face all challenges head on, and pass on the torch.”

Other Awards

Among the other awards Male Performance went to Shen Jie as Romeo in Hong Kong Ballet’s Romeo + Juliet. Like Huang Lei, with whom he shares the award, Shen is a third time recipient and one of Hong Kong’s most respected dancers. Hong Kong Ballet also received the award for Alternative Space Production for Five Tiny Dances at M+, while Gabriela Tylesova and Albert Au received the Set and Costume Design Award for the company’s The Nutcracker.

City Contemporary Dance Company Dance Centre, which has continued to provide invaluable support to the dance community despite going through some major recent upheavals, received the Award for Services to Dance for its Partnership Programme Venue Sponsor, while Passoverdance received the Dance Education Award for Jockey Club In Search of Voice in a Cramped City.

Shirley Loong Takes up the Post of Executive Director of Hong Kong Dance Alliance

2022.3.14

The Hong Kong Dance Alliance is delighted to announce that Shirley Loong has accepted our invitation to join the administrative team in the newly-created post of Executive Director, with effect from 10 March 2022. She will therefore step down from her current role as Chairperson and will be succeeded by Allen Lam, whose current role as Vice-Chairperson will be taken by Angela Hang.

The creation of the Executive Director position is the result of careful deliberation by the entire Executive Committee, aimed at responding to the Alliance’s need for a capable, senior level executive and decision-maker with a thorough understanding of the dance industry to head the administrative team. The worldwide pandemic has also prompted the Alliance to expedite this organizational restructuring in order to adapt swiftly to the fast-changing situation of the dance sectors both at home and abroad.

Ms Loong has been active in the local dance scene for many years, with a successful career spanning multiple roles from dancer, ballet teacher, dance educator, arts administrator and producer to her newly acquired qualification as an international accredited professional mediator, which led her to head the Performing Arts Profession International Mediation Committee. During her tenure as Chairperson, Ms Loong set a clear direction for the development of the Alliance, which is approaching its 30th anniversary in 2025. Allen Lam says, ‘We are delighted that Shirley has agreed to take on this new role. Her vast experience in the Hong Kong dance sector and in particular within the Alliance will help to make sure that expert advice can be turned into action effectively.’

‘I very much look forward to working closely with our new Chairperson, Allen Lam and Vice Chairperson, Angela Hang,’ says Ms Loong. ‘While working to accomplish the Alliance’s mission and vision, together we'll strive to broaden and strengthen our connection with stakeholders, funders and members of the Alliance, as well as the local and global dance communities.’

23rd Hong Kong Dance Awards 2022

- Shortlisted Nominations Announced

- Two Lifetime Achievement Awards to be presented

14 February 2022 – Hong Kong Dance Alliance (HKDA) is delighted to announce the shortlisted nominations for the 23rd Hong Kong Dance Awards and the presentation of the Lifetime Achievement Award to two distinguished members of the dance community: Professor Shen Shir Ming and Ms Tania Tang.

Since 1999, the Hong Kong Dance Awards have celebrated outstanding achievements in the local dance field and recognized artists and organizations for their contribution to the development of dance in Hong Kong. Those honoured in the past include companies such as City Contemporary Dance Company, Hong Kong Ballet, Hong Kong Dance Company, Unlock Dancing Plaza and Passoverdance and choreographers such as Helen Lai, Xing Liang and Yuri Ng. Among previous recipients of the Lifetime Achievement Award are Ringo Chan and Dr Tom Brown.

Shortlisted Nominations

For the 23rd Dance Awards, instead of the usual calendar year, the eligibility period for nominations ran from January 2020 to December 2021; this is because very few productions were staged in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

A new category, Online Production, has been introduced to reflect the strong trend towards online work and the excellence of such work being created in Hong Kong.

A total of over 50 outstanding nominations have been shortlisted under 15 award categories (please see below full list). The shortlists were determined by a ballot of expert panelists held after reviewing all the nominations received this year. A final ballot will be conducted in the coming weeks to decide the Awards with an expanded jury including all members of the HKDA Executive Committee.  Award recipients will be announced during the 23rd Hong Kong Dance Awards Presentation & Gala Performance. (For the list of expert panelists together with all rules and procedures of the shortlisting and final ballot process, please visit the webpage of About Hong Kong Dance Awards.

22nd Hong Kong Dance Awards

The 22nd Hong Kong Dance Awards Presentation & Gala Performance was originally scheduled to take place on 17 April 2020 at Kwai Tsing Theatre Auditorium, but in response to the COVID-19 Pandemic in Hong Kong, it was re-scheduled to be held on 18 July 2020 as a closed-door presentation ceremony.  However, the spike in COVID-19 cases in Hong Kong and re-tightening of social distancing measures meant the presentation ceremony had to be cancelled. Instead, the Awards were announced online, live-streamed on Facebook and YouTube, embracing the ‘new normal’ on 18 July 2020.

This year 16 awards in 14 categories, voted by a selection jury composed of the HKDA Executive Committee members and expert panelists from a range of dance-related disciplines, were announced.

In addition, the prestigious Distinguished Achievement Award, decided by the HKDA Executive Committee members, was presented to Daniel Yeung for his immense contribution to dance in Hong Kong as dancer, choreographer, curator, mentor and critic.

Video of the livestreamed Awards announcement is available on HKDA’s YouTube channel and Facebook Page.

About the Choreography
Choreographer: Chen Kai
Work length: Around 30 mins

-- An adventurous attempt to be an equilibrium in a suspended position
It will be a solo contemporary dance work. Restricting within a suspended-position on the footprint, Chen Kai tries to apply linear movement to visualize the bodily limitation of trace-points in Kinesphere, and to free the imagination of extension-points in sphere, which symbolically comes along with a metal round object, to shape a space.

About Classifiable Movement
Chen Kai has founded the Classifiable Movement to put his ‘Classifiable Movement’ theory into practice and visualize the concept of ‘let the movement speak for itself’. His logic thinking pattern cultivates the rational side of the dance and shapes multi-layers of movement analysis.
He created his choreographic method of ‘Classifiable Movement’, which has been categorizing movements according to their features, namely linear, turning, twist, flex and rolling, etc. Focusing on merely one feature each time, a series of pieces has been developed - Line, Circle, Line and Aureola, Sweep (overture), Twist, Flex, Circle II, Line II, Sweep, Movement with Fan and so on.

WALL
We have fallen into a continually drowning swirl where we struggled to shout in silence.
Choreographer's Words

Despite walking on bustling streets, everyone's heart is distant and unreachable. The high wall is built inside their bodies, which is as tall as the skyscraper, is breaking the connection of people in this city. I dwell in a 120 square feet space, being silent and insignificant. There is a glass wall in the air that separates me, her and them. We have fallen into a continually drowning swirl where we struggled to shout in silence.

Emerging Choreographers 2015

2015.7.3 - 4

Hong Kong Dance Alliance Proudly Presents

“Emerging Choreographers 2015”

Turning the Spotlight on New Talent

“Where are the choreographers of the future?” It’s a vital question for the dance community in Hong Kong and as part of its mission to support and develop local artists, Hong Kong Dance Alliance (HKDA) is proud to present “Emerging Choreographers 2015”, the latest in a series which gives up-and-coming choreographers a platform to create and present new work. Out of 18 applicants our expert panel has selected three talented young choreographers: Cliff Huen Tin-yeung, Joseph Lee Wai-nang and Li De. Mentored by Daniel Yeung, one of Hong Kong’s most respected choreographers, each will create an original 25-minute dance work to be performed in July at the Kwai Tsing Theatre Black Box Theatre.

Different Visions
The three choreographers come from different backgrounds and their work will offer different dance styles and address a range of topics.  Cliff Huen’s trio Still Human asks if our busy life, with everything made easy by technology, has made us lose our innate ability to use our senses and recall primitive memories. In his duet The Other End, Joseph Lee tries to show us how every decision we make affects our lives. Li De’s trio Wonderful/Wild, inspired by a documentary about Shaolin Kung Fu, will transform traditional Kung Fu to reveal new aspects of the martial arts.

Dance lovers should not miss the chance to see these three intriguing and exciting works in one evening.

.. Mis ..

Misplace, Mistakes, Mis… Why obsess over them if the “mis-es” defines you?
The path of growing up is a lonely one. It always feels that nobody understands you and that there is no one to guide you; so by instinct, you improvise as you go along in life; yet who dares say they don’t have any regrets throughout their path? Until one day, you can finally let go of those “mis-es” that caught you up and realize that they are exactly those mis-es that mold the person you current are.

And that, my friend, is when you are grown up.

Choreographer: Michael Tong

Michael Tong was first introduced to dancing when he entered university at the age of 19 . He joined the modern dance society of CUHK and had participated in multiple intervarsity dance performances and competitions. It is not until 2009 has he received technical training in Studiodanz. He joined the Showbiz project co-organized by Studiodanz and Space team in 2010 and had participated in several commercial performances including dancing for beauty pageants and in music videos. Since 2011, he has been focusing mainly on modern and contemporary and had taken part in modern dance pieces such as Solo Act II choreographed by Pewan Chow.

Tong has always been passionate about choreography; inspired by the various dance styles he has been exposed to, he takes interest in different possibilities in movements and has created pieces ranging from lyrical jazz to more contemporary recently.  Thanks to REAL showcase, he finally has the opportunity to launch his first full length dance piece

Project DARE Conversation Series 2012

2012.1.16 - 6.1

Project DARE falls under the umbrella dancers' transition initiative of the Hong Kong Dance Alliance, with the aim of providing induction to dance professionals interested in finding more about career possibilities beyond stage performance.

Talk 1: Dance Education -- "From dance 'teacher' to dance 'educator' - basic concepts of Dance Pedagogy/ Motif Teaching/ Creative Movements"

Being the first talk of the series, it was held on 16 Jan 2012. It was our pleasure to have Miss Yunyu Wang as our speaker. Miss Wang is a certified Labanotation teacher, reconstructor and Laban Movement Analyst. She has a MFA from the University of Illinois and is a founding dancer of Cloud Gate Theatre, Taiwan. Miss Wang is now the President of World Dance Alliance Asia Pacific.

About 50 participants joined the 2-hour talk, during which Miss Wang gave a high level introduction to Laban Movement Analysis. She then placed the concept of "dance education" in front of this theoretical backdrop to explain the difference between teaching "movement" and teaching "dance." Dance students should be encouraged to participate in creating movement and to understand their bodies, the knowledge in Dance Science and the different techniques in Somatics could help dance tutors in planning lesson plans more systematically.

Talk 2: Marketing -Basic concepts of Marketing and Dance Programme Publicity

The discipline of marketing applies not only to commercial sector, but also to dance, especially when artists have to deal with the reality of ticket sales. If the number of tickets sold is a reflection of the marketing effort devoted to the programme, what skills are required to take artists to their goals?

Katy Cheng, Marketing Director of Hong Kong Arts Festival Ltd., spent two hours in the evening of 12 March 2012 with over 20 practicing artists and arts administrators to reveal her experience and "tips" in dance marketing. While touching on basic marketing principles of the 4Ps, positioning, and advertising skills, Katy focused her sharing on case studies that provide real-life examples to close the perception gap of the relationship between "arts" and "sales." She also advised participants that as artists, while they should be dedicated to creating works, they should also be alert to what's happening around them so that their works can more readily relate to audiences, and hence a larger ticker sales potential.

Talk 3: Touring - how to create opportunity and how to nurture future potential

The 3rd talk of Conversation Series explores how emerging artists could get the attention from overseas program buyers and nurture for themselves overseas performance experience. The area of touring is getting more attention partly because of the stagnant audience growth in Hong Kong, and because of globalization trend making the exchange of cultural activities more and more popular.

Our speaker was Elaine Yeung, Chief Manager (Audience Building, Festivals & Entertainment), Leisure and Cultural Services Department, who previously spent a long period of time overseeing cultural exchange events of the LCSD. The talk was intended to be a small-group, cosy discussion on 1st June 2012. Elaine kindly shared her experience with the participants and welcoming took their questions and comments. One important piece of advice by Elaine to young artists was that they should strive for any kind of performing opportunities, regardless of scale, venue or target audiences, because this is the most direct way of creating exposure and remembrance. Also artists should aggressively reach out to producers to introduce themselves, and must maintain a positive attitude when failure calls as reality is harsh and competition keen. An artist's road to success is long and winding, but persistence wins.

"Close the Loop" Arts Administration Mentorship Program

2012.1.1

Co-presented by Hong Kong Dance Alliance and Hong Kong Arts Administrators Association, "Close the Loop" arts administration mentorship program aims to provide practicing artists in Hong Kong the opportunity to learn from a well-established arts administration mentor on one-on-one basis. Open for application at the beginning of 2012, seasoned arts administrators provided successful applicants guidance and problem solving techniques on the following areas:

  • budget management
  • legal and contractual requirements
  • team set up
  • timeline management
  • program positioning, marketing and publicity
  • ticketing
  • sponsorship and collaboration
  • communication skills
  • report writing

The mentor shared perspectives to broaden the artist's vision, enhancing his/her decision-making ability and problem-solving skills.

The successful applicants in 2012 are Mayson Tong Wai Chun and Rita Kwong Lai Yin. Their mentors are respectively Anthea Chan and Fong King Sang. Maysons production is scheduled for Aug 2012 and Rita's Oct 2012.

The lecture subjects were "Screendance" and "100 years of Le Sacre du Printemps". The former focused on the latest development of dance videos around the globe, while the latter examined the timeless themes and motifs of Le Sacre du Printemps, from its earliest history to present-day productions, in styles of dance as varied as ballet, hip-hop or butoh.

Art Administration Talk for Dance Practitioners

2011.10.13

A high-quality dance production is the combined effort of artistry and execution excellence. In a modern society where the ability to effectively multi-task is emphasized, it is important for dancers to also learn about arts management and administration. In view of this trend, Hong Kong Dance Alliance and Hong Kong Arts Administrators Association co-presented an art administration talk on 13 Oct 2011 and invited two veteran dance administrators, Ms Helen Ng and Ms Clementine Chan, Managing Director of City Contemporary Dance Company, to introduce to the participants the various aspects of dance / arts administration. Talk contents included:

  • Arts Administrators: who they are, and the skills required
  • Administrators as curators: how to bring out the best from the artists and from the programme
  • Be Organized: Project management
  • About $ : Budgeting and Financial Management
  • About People: Managing the team and other HR/ contractual issue
  • Post-performance issues - looking for further opportunities to perform re-run programme locally or abroad

Two new fringe activities were added in 2011 to introduce to the participants a more holistic approach to dance appreciation: In "Conversation with Choreographer," Jacky YU gave participants insights of how a creation was perceived and planned. In "Set as a Symbol," stage set designer YUEN Hon Wai explained the functional and aesthetic values of stage set in dance productions.

Participants should prepare an article (not less than 1,000 words in Chinese or English) after viewing each performance. Legend Lin Body Training Workshop for Professionals (2011)

2011.8.10
The much acclaimed and respected Legend Lin Dance Theatre from Taiwan has only created 3 productions in the 16 years since it was established. Such dedication and patience has won its recognition all over Europe and LIN Li-chen, Artistic Director, has been nominated as one of the 8 most influential contemporary choreographers by ARTE, Europe's leading art TV channel. The aesthetics of Legend Lin is inseparable from its body training system, which emphasizes power generated from concentration, serenity, flexibility. Focused spine training aims to make the dancers' spine as flexible as a whip. The more relaxed the spine is, the more powerful the energy transmitted.

LCSD commissioned Hong Kong Dance Alliance to conduct a workshop targeting professional dancers in August 2011 when Legend Lin Dance Theatre visited Hong Kong for activities related to Asian Cultural Festival 2011. Professionals will not only have the opportunity to experience this exclusive training system themselves, but also understand LIN Li-chen's aesthetics through a conversation session led by Aaron Wan.
Dance Productions - School Tour and Outreach

2011 International Arts Carnival

2011.5.20 - 8.14

LCSD commissioned Hong Kong Dance Alliance to produce the school and outreach tour for International Arts Carnival 2011. Hong Kong Dance Alliance saw this as an appropriate opportunity to conduct audience development at a deeper level, to the audiences at an age when they begin to see the possibility of differentiating art from entertainment.

The Project required us to produce 30 performances at schools and 20 at outreach venues. The theme of the performance is to challenge how our increasingly passivity when perceiving images and videos broadcasted on the Internet. Titled "Seeing" is Believing, the performance is designed for students between the age of 10-14. During school touring, there is also a 20-minute interaction with the audiences, with the purpose of inspiring them to view dance beyond movements and try to see understand the meaning that is being communicated. The theme is deliberately designed to be more serious and provoke doubts as we are against the assumption that teenagers will not be able to understand serious subject matters. It is the role of adults to find ways to make these subjects comprehensible to the teenagers instead of simply avoiding the discussion.

The tour ran from 20 May 2011 through to 14 August 2011.

HK / Australia Cultural Exchange: Perfect Pairs and Odd Couples (2011)

2011.1.7 - 9

Hong Kong Dance Alliance presented Perfect Pairs and Odd Couples with the aim of promoting artistic exchange between Hong Kong and Australian artists. Three performances ran at the Fringe Theatre, Hong Kong, between 7-9 January 2011.

The program opened with Sprung created by two of Australia's most recognized dance artists, Sue PEACOCK and Stefan KARLSSON. Combining theatre elements including music, visuals, text, and movement, the duet invited audiences to share the dancers' reminiscences of the highlights and low spots of their artistic life journeys. Melbourne-based artists Jo LLOYD and Deanne BUTTERWORTH's work Project Blah Blah gave an improvisational impression full of rapid and frequent changes of level and tempo that created a sense of unexpectedness and belied its careful construction. Hong Kong artists LI Yongjing and LAM Po closed the program with a new work, The Moment I Saw It. The work used large sheets of tracing paper to create crisp sound effects when crushed and to change the space into a nicely contrasting combination of black and white - the colors of Asian eyes.

Perfect Pairs and Odd Couples recorded a successful box office of two full houses out of three showings. Participating artists also gave workshops to professional dance practitioners and amateurs to strengthen the community engagement of the project.

Dance Enhance 2010

2010.11.1 - 2011.4.30

Into its 2nd year, Dance Enhance 2010 spanned a longer timeframe of 6 months from Nov 2010 to Apr 2011. The second dance criticism workshop continued to be a co-presentation with International Association of Theatre Critics (Hong Kong).

The class size for 2010 was the same as 2009: 30 participants. Compared to 2009, 2010 attracted a larger share of full-payment enrollment. It was encouraging to see more working people willing to devote their free time to writing dance critique articles and this exactly matched the objective of running Dance Enhance.

Dance Enhance 2010 consisted of 3 sessions for altogether 9 classes, including lectures, discussions and performances. Speakers included Dr. PK CHEUNG, Dr. LO Wai Luk, Yuri NG, Stella LAU, CHOW Fan Fu, Anna C Y CHAN, Kuh Fei, Dick WONG. Participants should prepare an article (not less than 1,000 words in Chinese or English) after viewing each performance. Articles were sent to senior dance critics or mentors for further reference and comments. Selected outstanding articles were published in dance journal/hk and the Hong Kong Dance Alliance website.

Each of them created a 10-12 minute new work which was presented at Cultural Activities Hall, Ngau Chi Wan Civic Centre between 7-9 May 2010. Participating choreographers were: Hugh CHO, Connie LAU, LEONG Wan Sing, and HO Ho Fei.

The project lasted for 4 months. It was divided into 3 sessions for altogether 11 classes. 30 participants attended the workshops, performances, pre-talks, post-talks and criticism sharing sessions. They should prepare an article (not less than 1,000 words in Chinese or English) after viewing each performance. Articles were sent to senior dance critics or mentors for further reference and comments. Selected outstanding articles were published in dance journal/hk and the Hong Kong Dance Alliance website.

Beijing Modern Dance Summit 2007

2007.7.4 - 11

March 2007, Hong Kong Dance Alliance was invited to participate in the Beijing Modern Dance Summit 2007 and to organize four Hong Kong small-scale dance companies to perform in Beijing in July. After several months of preparation, part of the event evolved into a "Hong Kong Cultural Series". The companies that visited Beijing were Unlock Dancing Plaza, why_me_dance, and Passover Dance Company. The three companies, with a total of 15 persons, including choreographers, dancers, technical coordinator, lighting designer, and stage assistant, visited Beijing from four to six days, in the period from 4 to 11 July 2007. The three companies each presented one performance, gave a dance workshop, and participated in a Meet-the-Artists session. This project is the first time that Hong Kong small-scale dance companies toured to Beijing, and it is very important for Beijing audiences to understand the modern dance development in Hong Kong, and to fully understand Hong Kong dance, arts, and culture.

Dance Platform 05 (2005)

2005.11.5

Dance Platform 05 is a project for new choreographers. To ensure that the project achieved a certain standard, an open call for proposals was announced in dance journal/hk. After selection by a panel composed of Pewan CHOW, Stella LAU, and YU Pik Yim, respectively Lecturers of Modern Dance, Ballet and Chinese Dance of Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, 7 artists/groups were invited to participate in the Project: 5 Ding, Informal Space, Kelvin LAM, Cindy LEUNG, Cyrus HUI, Pinkey TANG, Chloe WONG.

Dance Platform emphasizes the continuous process of choreography. To achieve that, two informal closed showings of works-in-progress were held in September and October 2005, before the formal public performance. Guests, such as Maggi SIETSMA, Tom BROWN, John UTAN, PEI Chang Qing were invited. After each showing, there was a discussion section, in which the guests gave their comments and the participating artists were encouraged to discuss and exchange observations among themselves. This is a meaningful part of the project that ensures the participating artists work continuously, and the feedback and discussion are valuable to new artists. This give and take of feedback from peers and experts helped the choreographers to further refine their ideas and develop their works.

2005 International Arts Carnival

2005.1.1

Hans Christian Andersen's "The Emperor's New Clothes" is so familiar to everyone that it might easily be dismissed as simply a tale only for children, overlooking its deeper meaning and much of its fun. In the summer of 2005, commissioned by the LCSD, Hong Kong Dance Alliance "updated" the story and bring to HK audiences a surprising Dance. The Emperor's New Clothes.

Why did the Emperor want so many clothes? How did he see himself in his mirror? What were the mirror's opinions? Are the Weavers merely con men with a fantastic con? What was on the child's mind when he pointed out the truth?

Touring to 50 primary schools and 20 outdoor venues, the performances let children discover the problems and answers through appreciating and participating.
