The 17th annual Hong Kong Dance Awards were presented last night at a sold-out gala performance at Kwai Tsing Theatre. Artistic Director David Liu put together a scintillating evening which showcased the depth and diversity of talent in the local dance scene. Performances ranging from ballet to ballroom, Chinese dance to hiphop and modern dance to musical theatre delighted the packed house.
With the results of the secret ballot to decide the Awards not revealed until the night itself, suspense was high as each envelope was opened. Among the outstanding achievements “the Award went to” were Hong Kong Dance Company’s epic production Storm Clouds, the Hong Kong Ballet’s dazzling ensemble performance in Don Quixote and Anh Ngoc Nguyen’s stunning choreography of Sense for City Contemporary Dance Company.
There was a standing ovation for the recipient of the prestigious Distinguished Achievement Award, Tom Brown, who for the past 30 years has inspired and supported young Hong Kong dancers and choreographers as teacher and mentor.
The Dance Awards are presented by the Hong Kong Dance Alliance. The gala performance was generously sponsored by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department.
