Hong Kong Young Choreographers Showcased in French Festival

[Hong Kong - 21 August 2014] Two young Hong Kong choreographers, Yang Hao and Lau Wai Shan, DoDo, were selected to present their choreography in showcases for the World Dance Alliance (WDA) Global Summit 2014, which was organized by the WDA and the Centre National de Danse Contemporaine (CNDC) during 6 – 11 July. The WDA constitutes three regional Centers: WDA Americas, encompassing countries from both North and South America; WDA Europe; and, WDA Asia Pacific with chapters in 16 countries in the Asia Pacific region as well as Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Among the twenty eight showcases presented by representatives from countries and regions, the two works from Hong Kong, Nothing… But Something by Yang Hao and Meet by DoDo Lau received highly favorable receptions and feedback from audiences. “Although it is only a 10-minute excerpts, Meet was very well structured, clearly illustrating the concept within such a short time. It was definitely an inspiring dance piece,” said one of the Taiwanese delegates. Nothing… But Something was also commented as a dance piece that had given the space for the audience to “create their own version of this dance theatre show in mind”.

Masterpieces such as Event, choreographed by Merce Cunningham and adapted by Robert Swinston, and Tragédie, choreographed by Olivier Dubois were among some of the dances showcased to dance professionals from all over the world at this prestigious festival, with a theme of “Contemporizing the past: Envisaging the future”.

About Creative Space: Residency for Mid-Career Choreographers
The Hong Kong choreographers contribution was part of the Hong Kong Dance Alliance project Creative Space: Residency for Mid-Career Choreographers that supported the development over five months of new works by up-and-coming Hong Kong choreographers.  The Alliance presented the works in Hong Kong as well as in international platforms. Funded by a Hong Kong Arts Development Council Multi-project Grant with the objective of broadening participants’ movement palette and skills, giving them more creative possibilities while providing a platform and resources to present their choreography to the world. The project is also supported by the Arts Development Fund of the Home Affairs Bureau, the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
